Hotel Höflehner Austria: A Dreamy Family Wellness Hotel in the Austrian Alps

There are some hotels that feel like simply a place to sleep, and then there are hotels that become part of the trip itself. Natur- und Wellnesshotel Höflehner definitely falls into the second category.
Located high in the Austrian Alps in the beautiful region of Styria, Hotel Höflehner combines incredible mountain views, family-friendly amenities, wellness, great food and plenty of reasons to actually slow down and enjoy the hotel. We were constantly in awe of each thoughtful touch that the hotel has and our kids said this was their fav hotel ( not just from our Austria trip…but ever). I have to agree…it definitely is in the top 3 places of best hotels we have stayed at!!!
After several busy days travelling through Austria, this was exactly the kind of stop we needed and below is everything you need to know.
The Rooms
We stayed in one of the Sky Chalets, which was such a great setup for a family. Helloooo bunkbeds!!!
The room had that modern alpine feel that Austria does so well, with lots of natural wood, cozy finishes and beautiful mountain views, but what really made it work for us was the layout.
The girls had their own bunk beds, mini little loft area where they played ABOVE the bunk beds, a back terrace and even a TV ( but there is obviously so much to do we didn’t turn it on once)
The Sky Chalet also had a HUGE terrace which we spent a lot of time on watching the dusky mountain sky. So dreamy.
Hotel Höflehner has a range of room categories, including family rooms, suites and chalet-style accommodations, so I would definitely look closely at the different layouts when booking with kids.
Kids Club + Ammenities
One of the things that makes Hotel Höflehner stand out is that it feels like a luxury wellness hotel for adults while still being genuinely family friendly.
The Kids Club gives children their own space to play and take part in activities, which is especially nice if parents want some time to enjoy the spa or simply have a quieter afternoon. You absolutely do not need to book it ahead of time either which is amazing.
They are building an ENTIRE new area for kids which will be done in early 2027! The property is home to animals including alpacas, goats and red deer, which adds another fun element for families.
Special Touches for Kids:
- Speciality plates at the buffet ( filled with animals), bibs and colouring placements for them
- Diapers in all the washrooms on the changing tables
- An Ice cream sundae machine and set up at dinner EVERY single night with optional cones and toppings
- Mini Robes
- A soccer field ( caged in so the balls don’t go too far!)
Dining/Restaurant Options
When booking a stay at this property, you have food included. This includes the following meals: A full breakfast spread ( buffet with live stations), a light lunch ( salads, 1 live station and other items like cheese, antipasto etc), and a la carte dinner OR buffet ( whatever you prefer).
The food was 10/10 and we felt the schnitzel specifically was the best one we had in all of meals in Austria which says A LOT. But don’t worry if Schnitzel is not your thing, they have a lot of gourmet options. One night I had trout and nother night a delicious burrata pasta.
Kids food: They have a specific area of the buffet for JUST kids. Think fish sticks, a pizza oven ( snuck myself some obviously), pasta where you can add your own sauce preference, vegetables and more!
Alcohol is additional and there are options to upgrade protein choices if you wanted. There are plenty of complimentary apples, teas and flavoured waters throughout the property though!
Coolest feature: They had a JUICER room where you can gather your own fruit and vegetables and make a custom juice of your choice.
Adult Bar: If you want to have a cocktail pre or post dinner and don’t want to worry about kids, you can visit their bar called Achemist which is a vibbeeee. They even have live music there sometimes!
Spa & Pools
The 5,000-square-metre Premium Alpine Spa is one of Hotel Höflehner’s biggest highlights. It is huge, with family-friendly pool areas as well as a separate 16+ adults-only wellness area.
A few standout features include:
- 12 saunas and steam baths ( we couldnt event see half of them there were so many!)
- 3 infrared cabins
- 6 relaxation houses
- 25-metre heated outdoor pool
- 2 Infinity and rooftop whirlpools ( craziest views!!!)
- Natural swimming pond ( with paddleboards)
- Children’s pool ( with kiddie slides and toys)
- A Yoga house/Pavillion with the craziest views
- A spin room ( state of the art) AND a seperate gym
- Daily sauna rituals and wellness activities ( think meditation sessions, pilates etc)- all complimentary
What I loved most was how many different places there were to relax. Between the pools, saunas, loungers, quiet rooms and chill zones, it never felt like everyone was crowded into one area.
After several busy sightseeing days in Austria, this was exactly the kind of place where we could slow down, swim with the girls and still sneak away for some adult-only spa time.
WHAT TO KNOW: Important Tidbits
- Plan to stay at least two nights: This isn’t the kind of hotel I would book as a quick overnight stop. A big part of the experience is actually enjoying the property, so I would give yourself at least two nights if your itinerary allows.
- They have a pillow menu. This is something we almost missed but man oh man was it amazing! I am someone who loves a body pillow and they brought one to the room!!
- Bike Riding: My husband did a crazy bike ride to a nearby lake through the mountains. So many trails to discover close by. This was an extra cost- roughly $40 Euros for 2 hours
- It works in every season. Summer is perfect for hiking, mountain activities and pool days, while winter completely transforms the hotel into a ski destination with direct access to the Schladming-Dachstein ski area.
- Be aware the drive up can be nerve wrecking: I am slightly afraid of heights and the drive up is a bit scary BUT it is only 5 minutes of narrow roads. Just keep that in mind before you head up. I think most Europeans are not phased by it ( and by husband wasn’t either) but I am a scaredy cat lol
- They give you a water proof bag for the pool. Each room get’s an insulated pool bag with towels that you can use to bring to the pool each day. I loved it- it was very big so I could schlep all the kids stuff too!
- If you want a half day trip, the stunning Stift Admont – Bibliothek und Museum is about an hour away ( library that inspired Beauty and the Beast!!)
