7 Of The Safest Caribbean Islands

If you are looking to travel to the Caribbean soon and are wondering what the safest Caribbean islands are, I got you! 

I have visited almost all of the countries in the Caribbean and am not only breaking down the facts and crime rates but telling you how I felt when I was there. Truth be told, I have felt more scared in certain parts of the United States than I did in Jamaica for example but Jamaica still has a bad rep and some crime rates to show for it. And while I felt super comfortable in Montego Bay, I want to share the best possible countries for you to visit in the Caribbean where the chance of danger is the lowest. 

I have visited most of these countries with my children and would bring them back in a heart beat…or travel here as a female solo traveller! 

St. Barth’s- One of the most safest Caribbean islands and also the most posh

St. Barths is the island in the Caribbean where the rich and famous go to play. Celebrities flock here year after year on their private planes and yachts…and for good reason.

This French island ( the officially language is actually french) is decked with 5 star resorts, luxury designer brands and private homes. It has an actual murder rate of ZERO and many of the local folks are known to leave their homes unlocked.

The most dangerous thing you can do in St. Barth’s is drink too much rose and then go into one of the designer stores unhinged!

Montserrat- The Safest of all the Caribbean Islands!

Montserrat is one of those islands that doesn’t even look like it’s in the Caribbean in some areas. It is mountainous, has a rugged volcanic landscape in some areas and has black sand beaches! It is considered one of the Leeward islands and has an extremely small population

Montserrrat, not to be confused with the area in Spain, is one of the best Caribbean islands if you want to be one with nature…and if you want to be safe. It is quite literally the safest of all the islands. It ranks #1 on any list you find!

Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos is one of my favourite Caribbean islands! I have visited 3 times in the last 2 years because I just can’t stay away haha. If you know you know. It truly is a paradise and if you live in North America, it is like getting a slice of the Maldives but with only a 4 hour flight involved.

Turks and Caicos relies heavily on tourism and they do a lot to make sure that tourists feel safe and that crime stays low. A lot of the high end hotels have security and even if you stay somewhere budget friendly, you are likely to feel safe! The police force there is known to respond quickly and monitor any sort of tourist area.

Antigua and Barbuda

One of the more smaller Caribbean islands, Antigua and Barbuda is considered one of the safest Caribbean options for many reasons!

First of all, given it’s smaller size it has a lower population. Less people= less problems! haha

Secondly, they have had a pretty stable and well liked government over the years with little to no political unrest.

Bonaire

Part of the ABC islands, Bonaire is so safe that there aren’t even any traffic lights as it’s just that small. It is filled with a community of people that are known to be some of the happiest people in the Caribbean overall. It isn’t uncommon for locals to say hi to anyone and everyone. They treat tourists like family!

Bonaire has a big focus on nature and sustainability and additionally they are located outside of the Hurricane belt. This makes it a safe Caribbean island with it’s weather and its people!

Barbados

Considering that Barbados receives over 1 million tourists per year, their crime rates ( especially petty crimes towards tourists) are extremely low. Barbados is one of the most popular and safest Caribbean islands you can visit overall!

The locals know that tourism plays a big part in their economy and after visiting and speaking to so many locals, they think the low crime rate is because they don’t want to jeopardize any of that. If the tourists are kept happy and safe, their economy will forever be booming and in turn lots of jobs will continue to be available for the locals.

Barbados overall is a very wealthy island as well! There are a ton of entrepreneurs and generational wealth on the island and lots of investments have been made to the country.

Anguilla

Anguilla, the tiny little island close to St. Martin, is another luxury island popular for honeymooning, baby moons and upscale hotels. Though it caters to a high end clientele, it still has such a charm about it and gives you those traditional Caribbean vibes that we all are after!

Unlike some of the other Caribbean islands on this list, Anguilla is a more sleepy island with very little party options. More partying= more problems! A lot of restaurants and cocktail options close down by 10PM and with that comes a lot less crime.
